Lost ability to hear audio from mpeg muxed sources
I did the latest round of software updates from Apple this morning. Did all of them-Pro Apps, Itunes etc. I now seem to have lost the ability to playback audio from any mpeg muxed files.I ran two spots through Compressor this morning for delivery to Time Warner Cable. When I went to check them before uploading, Quicktime played the files without audio. If I drag any older mpegs that I had already sent out, these fail to play back with audio as well. The are files that were fine in the past. Has this happened to anyone else?
I’m running OS 10.5.8. Quicktime 7.6.6
When I do a Get Info on the Quicktime icon, it indicates that it was modified in the latest round of updates this morning.Under a deadline, of course

I also have lost muxed audio playback from Streamclip as well.

This happened to me just the other day and this is what fixed it:
Put the FCP Installer Disc into your computer and then use the quick look on your file pull down menu to see the contents of the installer. Run the mpeg-2 playback component installer. That should fix the problem.Neal Broffman

I have the disc in the machine. Could you elaborate on how to do the “Quick Look” routine to get to the other files.

Open a new finder window.
Select the installer disc.
Select the Install Final Cut Pro icon.
At the top of the finder window click on the action pull down window.
Select the line that says “show original”Then select the folder called Packages.
Inside the packages folder you will see the QuickTime MPEG2.pkg installer.Neal Broffman

I found the Quicktime mpeg installer and ran it. Rebooted to be safe but still no sound on my mpegs. This is weird. I’ve never had a problem with this before. Gotta just love software updates.
Any more ideas on this one?

I reinstalled the mpeg player from my Studio 3 disc this time and the audio is working again. I bought the Studio 3 upgrade a few months ago. but haven’t had the downtime to install it yet. I was originally using my Studio 2 disc to reinstall the mpeg components. So…

The latest ProApps update was mostly for FCS3 and Snow Leopard installs. With an older OS, FCS2 and Quicktime, there was probably no reason to do the update.
It is always worth searching the forum first as well. Any update is usually reported on here very quickly. Thanks for the warning to others who I hope will search here first and find this post.
