Why hi CPU in FCP 6.06 when rendering?
First let me get a couple things out of the way.
I’m only the Net Admin and I’m not real familiar with Mac’s, let alone Final Cut. The guy that usually takes care of Mac/Final Cut issues is gone for now.
Second, We have 4 (similar) Final Cut 6.06 Mac Pro machines, and only one has developed this problem.
The problem is that whenever the editor goes to render, all 8 cores go to about 75-85% and the estimated rendering time goes from 1 min to 4 hours and 45 minutes. We haven’t let it finish to see if it completes. Rendering the SAME exact project on a different machine took 4 minutes and the CPU usage was only 35% (max) over 8 cores and it completed properly.
Both machines are Mac Pro dual Quad core XEON machines with Aja Kona boards. Both running Leopard, single system drive, software striped 3 drive array for video and access to a Terrablock server over fibrechannel. Both run FCP 6.06 and Adobe AfterEffects.
The machine suffering the problem has 8GB of ram and the one that completes fast has 4GB. The problem machine has >100GB free on the system drive, >1TB free on the Video drive and >1Tb free on the terrablock.
Any clues on where else to look would be highly appreciated.
