XDCAM to pal SD
Hi, I have some footage which is 1080 by 1920 HD (Apple XDCAM EX 1080i50 (35 Mb/s VBR), 1920 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), Millions). I need to edit it and then play it out via AJA card to pal Digi Beta so that It can be finished in Quantel Editbox (crazy I know). I am having trouble getting decent quality onto tape. It looks really soft and there is significant stair stepping. I am pretty new to HD and would appreciate some advice. So far I have tried editing it in an HD timeline (whatever FCP thinks it should be) and then converting it to DVCPRO50 via compressor. DVCPRO50 is the codec of choice where I am working. I have also tried prores 422. I have also tried mpeg stream clip and episode pro. My results vary slightly but are uniformly pretty poor. Any suggestions other than “do a search” welcome. I have done a search but have not found anything which has helped.

Which AJA card? Mine will output SD live, as well as capture it live. It does the downconvert in real time – just like the 525 card in my HDCAM deck. Of course we’re NTSC for the SD, so maybe there’s a difference there.
And which Editbox? (never really liked them, to be honest, very kludgey) It can use only SD?Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

I’ll check next week which card. We tried just playing it out to tape and it was horrible. I’m not sure which editbox but it only accepts stuff off tape. I have been looking into xdcam on the web. Would I be right to think that it is a fairly compromised hd format?

Lots of people like it. I think it’s a bit too full of artifacts for what you pay for it. But then I’ve been “stuck” with HDcam for about 8 years now, so it’s hard for me to look at much else. Though I’d like to get rid of the big camera and go to something smaller and lighter after all these years.
