Raid question – different drives
Hi guys, I hope you are all fine and dandy…
I couldn’t find a drive specific forum for this question.
I have a Lacie 4 drive Raid 5 box and one drive has failed. I have tried to rebuild it (twice) but it fails again after a short while.
I want to replace the one drive but the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 is not available and has been replaced by the 7200.12.
I have no idea what those .11 and .12 numbers mean, but would it be ok to replace the one for the other?

Hey Mark,
The answer is that you should always use identical drives, however, the Seagate that’s available now just might be close enough to work, and you’ll never know unless you try.
Sorry, but there’s no more definitive answer to the riddle than that. It’s certainly worthwhile buying one and trying it out rather than rushing to out to buy four or eight of that model.

We seem to have reverted to late winter at the moment, cold, windy, rainy…I will give the .12 drive a whirl, the .11’s are no longer available. I think they are less than 3 years old but I seem to have misplaced the receipt.

its worth checking what the warranty is on the actual drive.
I recently had 2 seagates fail (can’t remember the model numbers), and when i checked up found they had a 5 year warranty. I’d had them over a year running in a much larger raid than yours, so its possible the warranty is different. But check with seagate – they replaced both of mine free of charge.
