    Hi All,

I have just been hired to do a re-edit of a commercial spot. The client gave me a hard drive that supposedly had everything on it and it actually appears to be a very well laid out and organized project.

My only issue is that there is ONE animation file within the timeline that comes up with a red screen saying “Codec Could Not Be Opened”

I am at a loss, it is a .mov file. All the other animations work.

Its pixel aspect is NTSC CCIR 601. 29.97 FPS. Data rate 20.6 MB/sec. Field dominance LOWER (even). No compressor.

Thats about all I can tell you. If anybody has a friggin’ clue as to what is going on I would VERY THANKFUL!

    Does it open in QuickTime?

It does NOT open in quicktime. Quicktime will claim it needs to download some other codec but does not know which one.

you can try ‘MPEG Streamer’ to convert it

When you open it in Quicktime, do you get a white screen at least? If so, try Window –> Show Movie Inspector. That will tell you what codec it is.

Yes! A friend at work reccomended this last option as well. It is an Avid Codec. I believe I have found where to download the Avid codec as well, so for anybody else reading this: https://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=350875&Hilite=Codecs+Avid+Codecs
I will let you know if it works!

You will be able to open it once you have the avid codecs. But of course you can’t edit in the avid codec within fcp. You will need to use MPEG Streamclip or such to transcode it to an FCP friendly codec.
