FCP does not read a DVD. You have to rip the video off of it to edit the footage.

    You have a few options

MacTheRipper then transcode VOB to mov using one of the many transcoders out there (ex ffmpeg)

MPEG Streamclip -> Export to DV stream

Toast Titanium can also do a full rip to a DV stream, maybe only on unprotected DVDs. I just started using this method a few days ago.

Capture using log and capture and a dvd player w firewire out – timecode will be messed up though.

but honestly it’s just a pain in the ass. avoid having to get materials from authored DVDs as much as possible.

Sorry Sam, but you are making this overly complicated, and both of your methods below are just not based on solid information.

[Sam Ellens] “MacTheRipper then transcode VOB to mov using one of the many transcoders out there (ex ffmpeg) “

There’s no reason whatoever to use a method that requires further transcoding. Both of your methods above, using MacTheRipper and Streamclip would require that. A DV stream is not QT compliant, however exporting to Quicktime and choosing DV as the codec creates a normal QT DV files with full realtime capabilities in FCP.

    Bruce,

Just use MPEG Streamclip and export to Quicktime. All of the most knowledgeable professionals use it, and use it for good reason. Simply choose Export to Quicktime, and select the QT codec of choice that best matches the other material in your sequence.

Do not use MacTheRipper, do not export to DV stream, and do not pass go or collect $200.
