Question / Survey – LTO Tape
How many people here are currently using or would suggest LTO tape as a current solution for backing up media?
Our two Drobo Pros at work are way unreliable, and my boss wants to find a new solution. I want to suggest LTO tape to him, but our outside tech. guy said LTO is a hassle. He also said it’s a big nuisance when trying to recover a corrupt tape, however, I figure we would have multiple copies of tapes for safety. Some guy at B&H also told me it was “old technology.”
So despite what these people have said to me, would you still suggest it? Has anyone had any problems with LTO tape?

Thanks Jeremy. I actually just wanted to know if people were still using LTO despite what I’ve been told by others. It looks like people are.

One of the things that makes LTO a viable archive format is that its the Standard in the Financial World like banks, brokers, alchemists (hahaha)
which guarantees that 20 minutes from now you will still be able to recover the data on those tapes. as opposed to other tape formats that have disappeared and been EOL’dWe were using an Onstream for a while, adn the best way it worked was when it was on its own machine so it could run in the Background over ethernet.
The other people on the network would complain sometimes about moving a 100 gBs of media over 100baseT, but the heck with em they cant take a joke!

We use LTO for all our long-term backup. 400GB for £15 mean it’s a no brainer. True it takes a long time to archive and retrieve, but that’s why we use it for long term, and not short term. The way I look at it is like this:
If someone hands me a 10 year old Beta SP I can stick it in a deck and play it. If someone hands me a 10 year old LTO tape I can stick it in a drive and scan it. If someone hands me a 10 year old HD – I’m not so sure I can use it – is it PATA? SCSI?
