  • External HDD crashed, lost only cap scratch media. Help!

Posted by Daniel Sadgrove on March 15, 2010 at 9:51 pm

    Hi,

I was working on FCP 6 and using an NTFS external harddrive to store my media in when I accidentally unplugged the harddrive. The “Device Removal” warning came up and all my media got disconnected. Normally this wouldn’t cause panic and I would just replug the harddrive in and reconnect the media.

However, this time all the capture scratch media I was using in FCP are missing from the external, it’s like they’ve magically disappeared and I fear I will have to reingest everything all over again finding the right in and out points (projects due asap and hopefully this won’t be an option as it would take a day to get everything in again).

Is there anyway I can recover the lost media somehow? Some program to use or instructions to follow.

    Thanks,

    Dan

The first thing I would do is run Disk Warrior on the offending drive. Then fix permissions with Disk Utility. Running these may restore the header info on your hard drive that possibly became corrupted.

If you only lost your media you wouldn’t have to re-mark your ins and outs. Just recapture your footage.

    Hi David,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately Disk Warrior cannot rebuild the directory because the file system is unsupported. It says “This disk is not a Macintosh disk. This Disk does not appear on the desktop”

I’m guessing this is because it is a Windows formatted drive.

Disk Utility wouldn’t let me repair the permissions and crashed when it tried to repair the disk.

Is there any PC program I can use to repair the disk if I try it on a Windows computer?

I hope I don’t have to recapture all the footage, that could take a while!

question – why use a NTFS drive as your scratch? Even with ntfs-3g and other NTFS drivers it’s still not great and still loses data easily when you experience a power loss or accidental disconnect.

It was the drive provided to me for the job.

This is a problem Daniel. As Sam implies, you should not be editing in FCP with any drive that is not properly formatted for the Mac.

The fact that the drive was given to you with NTFS formatting is not good enough, as you have already found out in a trial by fire, and that will undoubtedly cost you many hours of time recapturing. In the future, you should copy all work onto a proper drive formatted as Mac Extended, do all of you work, and then copy the completed work onto the client’s drive, if necessary, only when you are completely finished.

Cheers David. Trial by fire, indeed. Looks like a long night ahead of recapturing.
