  • Color Correction: Trouble with Black colors

Posted by Laura Niebrugge on March 5, 2010 at 12:08 am

I recently shot a piece in a darkly lit room with various lights set up. Now I’m trying to get the colors to match the other footage with slightly different lightning, color-wise.
The problem is that somehow the blacks aren’t matching up. With the footage I’m having trouble with, the blacks appear faded and sometimes brown, and never true black. Any suggestions on how I might fix this?

If you use the 3 way Color Corrector filter built into FCP you have control specifically over the black level and the black color balance.

With that yo should be able to get a better color match. The RGB parade view in scopes will help you to get even levels and color

As Michael says, esp scopes. if your gfx card can handle it expand the scopes window larger. blacks are at zero. be aware the center of the vectorscope is centered black as well. between the vector and parade displays you should get close, unless of course there was not enough light then your footage will get noisy or be dark
