    Hi,

    My project sequence is set at 1920 – 804 square pixels. I am importing 1920 * 1080 footage into the timeline, but it constrains the picture to the height(804), leaving black spaces either side. I then have to manually resize to fill the picture. Is there anyway the footage can be imported constraining to the width, so I don’t have to resize? Also, I presume there is no loss of quality by resizing to the original width?

    Sure I do a lot of concept art at 2048 858 2:39:1 resolution for a DCI digital cinema projector used for presentations to the director. In this instance I have some video footage at 1920, and prefer to use the Christies digital up-scaler on board the projector as its a much better for workflow and quality rather than using software to bring the 1920 up to 2048.

    1920 divided by 804 is 2.39. I guess he’s just going for that scope look. Most people would still edit in a 1920×1080 sequence to be broadcast friendly for TVs and other equipment and just ad the widescreen filter to the footage.

    But yes, there is a way to have FCP not scale the clips to fit. User Preferences – Editing – bottom right says “Always scale clips to sequence size” – deselect this.

    Again, I would suggest editing at 1920×1080, but that’s just me.

    Great thanks Russell. All the concept art I do/the company does is scaled down to 2048 858 (drawn in corel/photoshop). In this instance I had to match it with 1920 footage with guides, so it’s much faster, takes less space than cutting to scope later. Also I can align my concept drawings better. But for all other purposes, if it were for TV for instance, your right.

    With you selecting exactly 2.39, I had a feeling that you had a good reason for working at that resolution, but you never know with some of the silly questions that get asked around here.
