dv format to widescreen
Posted by Rob Spence on February 25, 2010 at 10:54 pmHello
I have a dv project 5:3 format. It was shot on film and transferred to minidv and came with letterboxing as the film was shot 1:85.
I would like to have the finished edit in wide screen format…can anyone advise on how to do this.
cheers

[rob spence] “I have a dv project 5:3 format”
I assume you mean 4:3 unless Im missing out on some new format 🙂
Since your footage has already been letter-boxed you don’t have a ton
of options other than getting the footage as something else.If you want to stay in NTSC then you want your footage in 4×3 Anamorphic (widescreen)
This format uses non-square pixels to “fake” a 16:9 aspect ratio since there
really is no such thing as 16:9 ntsc. But since your coming from film you could set your sights a lot
higher and get an HD version if possible. If you can get your footage delivered in almost any
other fashion than DV you will be preserving a ton of information thats
available from the Film.-Andy

February 26, 2010 at 5:36 amSince you shot on film the best option for you would be to match back to your camera negative and telecine that at 1080 24P to finish in HD or scan at 2k to finish in film.
You would then do your titles, effects and color grade at 1080 or 2k.
If you telecine to 1080 you have the option to preserve the 1.85 aspect ratio with a letterbox, or to clip off the left & right edges to fill the 16×9 frame.

February 26, 2010 at 11:20 amThanks for the replies…looks like I’ll need to re-telecine from the neg.
I’m new to HD editing and now have access to an uncompressed suite. If I re-telecine to my portable hard drive what type of files do I need for absolute best quality ( ie 2k )
cheers

February 26, 2010 at 1:51 pmWho is doing the finishing? They will have their own preference. And what are you finishing to? That will effect your choices, as well.
