Problems with batch list in final cut pro
Hi everybody.
I’m about to start up the logging process on a documentary, and I keep getting the same message when I try to Batch Capture clips that I have imported to FCP on a batch list. The error message is: Batch Capture: Timecode Error: unable to locate the specified timecode. You may have specified a timecode with insufficient room for a pre/post roll operation.
I am pretty sure that I do have enough pre/post roll on the clips, since it is clips in the middle of the tape.
Do you guys have any ideas what the problem is?Steffen Niemann

COuld be a number of reasons.
is it only this clip? Does the tc from the batch list come close to what’s on the tape?

What format are you capturing from and what deck are you using? I have lots of problems with my Sony HVR-1500 and FCP. With HDV footage I have to use a ten second pre-roll or else FCP arbitrarily captures whatever it wants. If I capture any SD (Mini-DV, DVCam) footage it works perfectly every time. I have captured DVCPro HD from a Panasonic deck and it works perfectly. My HVR-1500 works perfectly in SD or HD with Premiere!
I have isolated the problem to be with FCP. I was told by an Apple FCP employee that Apple isn’t really concerned with tape-based workflows any more. They don’t want to change any of the deck control software for fear of breaking something that is currently working correctly.

I’d imagine this would get better with rs-422 control. FireWire capture has always been a bit flaky in FCP eVen when FCP was touted being the fw HD capture tool of choice with dvcpro HD and fcp4.5.

Who said I was using FW control? I am using RS-422 control and HD-SDI. I am using a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme HD capture card. I have not been able to get FCP to capture HDV from the HVR-1500 with either firewire or RS-422. However – both Premiere Pro CS3 and Blackmagic Deck Control WILL capture HDV every time – perfectly, 100%, no errors. The FCP I/O driver for the HVR-1500 is written poorly.

I’ve experienced the same problems w/the HVR-1500 as Ken. We purchased one of those decks to sit on the video router in the machine room but it acts so flakey we just move it from bay to bay and use FW to capture (just like we do w/our decks that cost half as much).

Have either of you tried a Kona to see if it makes a difference?

I have not tried a Kona card myself, but others on this board have had the exact same problem whether using a Kona or Blackmagic card. The problem is not with Blackmagic or Kona – I am 100% positive the problem lies with FCP. See these posts for people with Kona issues:

I am capturing SD Mini DV tapes from a Sony DCR-HC20 handycam.
I will try to add a longer pre roll as you suggested.

Just watched your video.
That totally sucks.
I can’t speak to Blackmagic as I don’t have one, but AJA offers a few different device control protocols and also has a plug in that will change the way FCP polls the deck. Perhaps someone with a Kona card can try these to see if there’s a combo that works.
In comparing the HDV and Rs422 device control presets, the rs422 is setup to NOT use the deck search mechanism. FW is. I’d also change the preroll to at least 5 seconds. Also, does the deck have any reference presets? Like can you sync to incoming video or to blackburst?
This feels/looks like a solvable solution. It’s just a matter of getting the switches right to make FCP happy.
