  • FCP7+ Kona3 RT Offline Digitizing = wrong frame size

Posted by Kristina Scott on February 18, 2010 at 8:43 am

I am looking for others that can give me feedback on why this seems to be happening. I am running FCP7 and digitizing SDI through AJA Kona3 version 7.5 with a capture preset for RT OFFLINE. My capture presets are the same as they used to be when using FCP6 with KONA3- 525 29.97 Offline RT, and the preset editor shows the frame size as being 320X240 with a photo jpeg compression. Once digitized, the clip appears in the FCP viewer the top left corner of an all green viewer. When checking the frame size within the browser, FCP displays it as being 640X480. Here comes the even more confusing part: when opening in Quicktime the frame size looks correct and even when getting info from QT it states that the captured photo jpeg qt is 320X240. However, importing back into FCP- the frame size is listed as 640X480. I can assume that this may have something to do with the upgrade to a Kona3 7.5 and working with FCP7, but you know what assuming does. Does anyone have have a work around or know of Kona3 7.5 not working with FCP7? I can tell you that I do have another computer running Kona3 6.5 and FCP and it is digitizing correctly.

    -Thanks,
    Kristina

I wouldn’t bother with OfflineRT if you have FCP 7. Use one one the new flavors of ProRes as your offline codec (ProRes LT or ProRes Proxy). They are full raster codecs and fully supported for RT.

Unfortunately the new Pro Rez proxy files sizes are too large for reality tv shows to work with that shoot 100+ hours per episode. Our server is already 100+TB because of the amount of shows we post each week. Offline RT has to remain a viable codec for the future of reality tv, especially with network budgets shrinking and them having no desire to offer production companies rental costs for media storage in the budgets. The fact that offline RT is not working properly in Final Cut Pro v7.0.1 is an AJA problem. Clearly AJA is behind in the times and has not properly tested all of the codecs in FCP7 with their video cards.
