    Greetings,
I’ve been having difficulty working with client supplied QT files set at 720p 23.98 1280×720.
The issue is that I can’t get a signal to pass via SDI or firewire to a supported 23.98 monitor or DVCPROHD deck.
I can upconvert the signal to 1080i 23.98 and lay off to HDCAM or render the file to 720p 59.94. But keeping the file in it’s native format I have no means to work with the file. Other than playing it in an FCP timeline or as a stand alone QT.
When the Panasonic AJ HD1400 DVCPro deck is set to 720p 23.98 the deck allows no passthrough of signal and some operations on the deck cease to function.
Set the deck to 720p 59.94 with a matching file…and bingo no problems!
    My system is:
Mac running FCP7 with a Kona 3 with all available updates installed.
The system works flawlessly with the exception of this file structure.
Sidenote, I’ve tried this experiment on 2 other Macs running slightly different configurations with the same results.
I’ve spoken to both AJA/Kona and Apple support. Nobody seems to have a clearcut answer. So, I throw it to the masses for discussion
    Any input would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    -JDC

Well, DVCPRO HD decks don’t do 23.98. They only to 59.94 at 720p or 29.97 at 1080. You can play out at 59.94 via the deck via firewire and as you said, it will be fine.

You have a Kona card? There is a setting for AJA KONA 720p DVCPRO HD 23.98 VFR. That not work?

[John DiCarlo] “I can upconvert the signal to 1080i 23.98 and lay off to HDCAM or render the file to 720p 59.94. But keeping the file in it’s native format I have no means to work with the file. Other than playing it in an FCP timeline or as a stand alone QT. “

OK, what are you trying to do? Layback to tape? Edit? What? You said that you can layback to tape, you said that you can play it in FCP (and thus edit it)…and that you can play it in QT. So what exactly do you mean by WORK with it?

You aren’t clear about what you are trying to do.

    Shane,
Thanks for responding. To try and be more clear. I can’t work with the clips in there current native format to layoff to tape, view it on a monitor or send that signal out of the Kona via SDI to downconvert to SD. Just to name a few. As stated I can upconvert to 1080i 23.98 via the Kona with no rendering. Can also use any number of hardware encoders to accomplish that as well.
The request from our last client was to make a SD DVD with a window burn. I had to render the clip to 720p59.94 in order to get any signal output. Then do the downconvert to SD. I was sending the converted signal to a set top DVD recorder. So, not crunching it in Compressor or doing a real time encode using Sonic.
No issue being able to edit the footage in it’s native format.
Output to anything at 720p 23.98 seems to be the issue.
Haven’t tried encoding a blu-ray at the rate yet.

    For the DVD dub:

Try choosing AJA Kona 720p59.94 as the output setting in the FCP AV settings dialog box, then configure the Kona in the AJA Control Panel to downconvert to SD in hardware. This should give you NTSC 29.97 interlaced with 3:2 pulldown added, all with no rendering required (aside from the TCR window).

[John DiCarlo] “. I can’t work with the clips in there current native format to layoff to tape, view it on a monitor or send that signal out of the Kona via SDI to downconvert to SD”

Really? I have no problem doing this. In the AJA KONA Control Panel, what is your FRAME BUFFER set to? What about your VIEW>VIDEO PLAYBACK? I have had great luck outputting using the AJA KONA 720p DVCPRO HD 23.98 VFR. Then from there in the AJA Control Panel, set to downconvert to 525i 29.97.

[John DiCarlo] “The request from our last client was to make a SD DVD with a window burn. I had to render the clip to 720p59.94 in order to get any signal output. Then do the downconvert to SD. “

You didn’t author one in Compressor/DVD SP? Well, true, faster to output to DVD Recorder. Well, Kona 720p DVCPRO HD 59.94 should work FINE for that. I use that all the time.

Thanks again guys for the input. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you can’t keep 720p 23.98 footage native when going to tape. The DVCPRO HD deck can be set to 720p 23.98 and you can set the Kona output to match but and it’s a big BUT, you cannot record to tape at that frequency. At least I can’t.
Shane if you look closely at the DVCPRO HD VFR settings, the video output is 59.94 not 23.98. So, I can’t seem to retain the 23.98fps.
Doing a pulldown and adding frames, etc. can be a problem dependent on the content of the video. It can create a host of artifacting, aliasing
    and other issues.
VFR may be a solution when downconverting to SD. Thanks for that suggestion.

[John DiCarlo] “The DVCPRO HD deck can be set to 720p 23.98 and you can set the Kona output to match but and it’s a big BUT, you cannot record to tape at that frequency.”

That would be very hard to do since there is, officially, no such thing as 720P 23.98. Nor is there (officially) a 30P or 25P in 720. According to SMPTE, etc, 720P only exists at 59.94P and 50P, so DVCPro HD decks, along with HDCam SR and D5 decks, can only record 720P at 59.94P and 50P.

If you set your FCP output to 720P 59.94 you will be able to play out your 23.98 timeline to your monitor and your deck with no problems. Your Kona card will simply add duplicate frames to make 2-3 pulldown. This is the native format for 720P, some of us call it “24 over 60”.

BTW, this is the 3rd or 4th time this exact problem has come up on this forum in the last couple of weeks.
