I am trying to capture HDCAM footage from a Sony JH-3 into FCP 7.1 using a KONA LHe. The finished project is a :30 T.V. spot edited @ 29.97 fps, HD 1080i. I’m trying to batch capture some 23.98 footage with audio from the JH-3 and Final Cut keeps giving me an error message once batch capture starts. The error message says “Tape trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first.” I’ve got the JH-3 set to the 23.98PD setting and my capture setting in FCP set to 29.97. I’m capturing using ProRes 422 setting. I’ve tried a few of the Sony device control settings in the capture dialog and all of them have the same issue. I uninstalled the AJA driver and installed v. 7.5 – same problem. I’ve checked my RS-422 cable connections as well. Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance!

I’ve had this problem with my SRW-5500 if I forget to change the TC sense adjustment from LINE/24 to FC/30 so that the pulldown added to timecode gets sent down the RS-422 line. This is most likely what’s causing FCP to balk – it’s getting 30-frame picture, but sensing 24-frame timecode over RS-422. I don’t know what the setting is on the JH-3 but it’s probably in the menus.

Thanks for the quick reply… just to be certain that I’m doing this correctly: Set the 24F TC A-FRAME to 00:00:00:00 and the 30F TC A-FRAME to 00:00:00:00. Would that be correct? (BTW, on the JH-3 the menu item numbers are 623 and 624 respectively).

I think you have that stuff all correct. But there’s more to it, at least on the SR deck. Look for these kinds of menu items:
    TC Convert = ON
    Set Frame = 30F
    9P TC Sense = FC/30

Those are in my preset when I’m doing pulldown add from the deck and capturing as 1080/59.94i.
