    Using Final Cut Pro HD on first model G5, shooting with Panasonic DVX100 NTSC format. When I can even manage to import footage without receiving endless “dropped frame” problems (have tried importing into iMovie due to this then uploading footage into Final Cut) the footage appears as follows: horribly pixilated, color distortion, square blotches on dark footage, and with severe motion blur/horizontal lines. When plugging camera directly into a monitor non of these problems are visible and footage looks just as it should so the problem doesn’t seem to be the camera. Upon export quality of footage is reduced as such. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    How are you monitoring the footage to just quality? The only way to get a semi-real it to have you viewer or canvas set to 100% anything else is not displaying all the info.

    It would as be really helpful if you stated your settings and procedures.

    There is no reason whatsoever that you should be getting dropped frames while importing NTSC DV footage unless something is seriously wrong with your storage configuration.

    Are you doing either of the following?

    A) capturing video to your system drive

    B) capturing via Firewire from the camera/deck to a Firewire drive connected to another one of the computer’s built-in FIrewire ports

    Never capture video to your computer’s system drive.

    Avoid capturing form Firewire devices directly to Firewire storage when both the camera/deck and Firewire hard drive are both connected to the Mac’s built-in Firewire ports. It works, but it’s not recommended because the Mac’s built-in Firewire ports all share the same bus, and bus contention problems can arise. Instead, either

    A) capture to a second internal SATA drive (not the system drive)

    B) add a Firewire PCI card to your G5 and connect any external Firewire storage to the PCI card instead of to the computer’s built-in Firewire ports

    C) add an eSATA PCI card and use an external drive connected to the eSATA port
