Not enough Memory
Posted by Peter Fuhrman on January 30, 2010 at 5:24 pmI’m rebuilding a crashed sequence from iMovie in Final Cut Express. When I try to render my timeline in FC Express, I get the error message, NOT ENOUGH MEMORY. Any suggestions about what I need to do?
Thank you,

January 30, 2010 at 6:13 pmI don’t know about FCE, but I had a similar crisis with FCS 2 earlier this week. Couldn’t figure it out as I had more than enough RAM and space on my boot drive and media drive. But trying to render my sequence caused the application to crash.
The answer is that Final Cut Studio limits the amount of RAM that the application can use to store still images. So it’s possible for the application not to have enough RAM even if your computer has more than enough for the job.
The solution–in my case–was to increase the Stills Cache to 15000 kb (Not in front of my system, but I think it’s located at FCP>Settings>Memory & Cache tab>Stills Cache.)
Hope that helps.

January 31, 2010 at 11:36 pmThat message can erroneously appear when rendering a sequence with still images that have pixel dimensions greater than 4k.
If there are any files in the sequence that have pixel dimensions greater than 4k, resize them first.
There may also be a corrupt file. Try rendering small sections of the timeline until you find the area that the render fails on. You should be able to narrow the problem down to single clips.

February 2, 2010 at 1:37 pmKeep in mind that Final Cut is STILL a 32 bit application, which limits it to 4GB memory space. Throwing more ram in your machine won’t help. Also remember that OSX is notoriously bad at memory management, so that “Out of Memory” error could be the result of fragmented ram. I’ve had that same problem on some projects and I can usually solve it with a reboot.
