how good do the Kona SD to HD conversions look
Posted by Bill Willins on January 22, 2010 at 1:57 amWe have lots of Sony DVCAM SD footage and some Beta SP stuff . What I was wondering is how good will this stuff look if you do a Kona up conversion to HD ? Should we even be thinking this way ? Or have most of you simply bit the bullet … and gone out and shot all new HD Cam stuff. Thank you.

Good. Tough to say “HOW good,” because it is relative. You have to see it to know what it looks like. Can’t be described. But, I can say that I worked on a show recently about a president who was assassinated in the 60’s, and we upconverted all, and I mean ALL the beta and digibeta to HD pillarbox. Now, we did this for one network, but two other networks had the same idea…and all did HD shows. One of the competing networks emailed us saying that our show looked “very good, nice and clean. How did you do that?”
Their show…Done on Avid. Not sure how they upconverted. Ours…FCP, using the Kona 3 and AJA IOHD.

Absolutely.

Wait. Do you mean that you want to continue to shoot SD, but then try to upconvert it and pass it off as an HD show? Well, THAT ain’t gonna work. SD won’t look like HD, even upconverted. If people want HD, you are going to need to shoot HD.

January 22, 2010 at 3:59 amI absolutely agree with Shane on this one. I’ve seen Kona do some magical things with footage, and the IOHD is smooth; then again, some footage, like people say, is what it is. But I’ll second the opinion that it’s something to look in to for sure.

January 22, 2010 at 1:43 pmDVCAM does not generally upconvert as well as Beta or DigiBeta material. There’s just not as much information there. About 75% of the DVCAM material we’ve upconverted looks pristine, the rest just so so.
ALL of the Beta/DigiBeta material looks incredible after the upconvert. We’ve upconverted DVCAM, DigiBeta, BetaSP, and BetaSX for a current documentary we’re working on.
As Shane said, if you’re looking to deliver original content in HD, then switch over to HD cameras and just use the SD for archival material.

January 22, 2010 at 5:22 pmI just tested uprezing some DVCAM footage to HD and was pleasantly surprised. We have component outs on our DSR-1500 which might help.

January 22, 2010 at 6:28 pmThanks everyone for your info … very helpful. Yes I am just talking about some of our old stock stuff that I would like to upconvert to HD. Obviously we will shoot all the new stuff in HD. Half of this footage is on BetaSP and half on Sony DVCAM , so it sounds like the Beta SP footage will look better. But what I learned from is that the Kona card does a pretty good job upconverting overall … so that is good news for our old footage 🙂 Thank you all.
