    Hi,

I’m trying to find the best quality but smallest file size option when exporting to QT. Lately I’ve been capturing and finishing in HDV 1080/50i and when exporting I do a QT conversion with the settings adjusted to reflect that – the quality is good but the files are quite large. Would I lose quality if I kept the H.264 setting or exported them in a different format say dvcam?

These files are then converted in Compressor where even mpeg 2 or 4 doesn’t make them small enough.

The final destination for these files is broadcast TV. I FTP them to a site but the transfer rate is about a meg a minute so every meg counts.

    Thanks,

    John

Firstly DV codec and HDV have the same data rate so you would be losing a lot of quality without reducing the file size.

Broadcasters mostly use mpeg2, particularly for SD broadcast. You should find out what the broadcasters will accept and use Compressor to create a file to their specs. mpeg2 & mpeg4 are as small as you will get for broadcast files and this approach will make for the absolute minimum in file transcoding. (Mpeg4 is the same as H264)
