Export problems
Hello there,
First of all I should say I’m from Australia and work with PAL, not NTSC.
I have finished editing a short film, which is due for a competition deadline by tomorrow.
Unfortunately, after trying many different methods and formats to export the sequence, the final result is either squeezed or stretched, with black bars at the top and bottom, or at either side of the screen.
I am by no means an expert in this sort of thing so I apologise if the following is poorly explained. I’m sure it’s a simple question but have this niggling feeling that it could be a problem without a quick solution, that I would need to re-cut the whole thing again, with different import methods.
Anyhow, here it goes.
It’s a stop motion film. Originally the photos were taken at a resolution of 4272×2848. They were obviously too big to manage in FCP so I batch resaved them to a resolution of 720×480, which seemed to be the only available aspect ratio that kept everything in proportion.
I brought all the photos into the browser, and noticed their pixel aspect was NTSC. I mass changed them to PAL CCIR 601, and everything seemed to be working fine. I’m not sure if that mass change was a bad idea, but it all seemed fine to me. I went on and exported and reimported all the photos as editable mov files and went on and edited the film.
No hiccups, any time during the process, if i wanted to see an export I’d export a quicktime reference , it would play full screen on the imac 16:9 display, in perfect proportion. So I kept editing.
The competition requires two DVD’s. I’ve exported the sequence as m2v and ac3 files and now the image is stretched and has black bars on both the top and bottom of the screen. No matter what I do.
In compressor. The Video section in ‘A/V Attributes’. Encoded bounds reads 720×480 and the display bounds read 768×480. There is no way to alter this.
I thought as a last resort, instead of working with m2v and dvd studio pro, i could drag one of the test quick time references id done of the sequence during the editing process, into idvd. The image squeezed inwards, with black bars on either side, whether i chose a 16:9 or 4:3 project.
I assume most people on this forum work with NTSC, and not PAL, but I am at a loss on what to do now. I’m kinda proud of the film but to submit it to this festival with a stretched image would really suck.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Hi Jeremy,
You started choosing a wrong size; 720×480 is not 16×9, neither 4×3.
You should have choose I guess you want 16×9) 1024×720 or 720x 405.
These sizes (Square pixels) would fit in a PAL Anamorphic canvas.
Another thing is that if you have resized your Stills in Photoshop, you must identify your pictures as “Square Pixels”in FC’s Browser.
So check all your stills as Square pixels and drop them in a PAL Anamorphic sequence.
