Upconversions
Not sure if this is the right forum, so if I’m wrong, please direct me to where I should be asking this.
Right now, I’ve been tasked with upconverting a handful of short videos from a 525i29.97 Apple Pro-res codec to 1080i29.97, Apple Pro-res.
The problem is, I don’t have the original sources for these videos, just the files in Apple Pro-res. The way I’m doing it now is this:
I have to machines set up. From Machine 1, I place the 525 Pro-res file into Virtual VTR. I send Virtual VTR through a Teranex box (a hardware upconverter). From there, I send the signal of the Teranex to the second machine. In Machine #2, I have FCP open where I catch the file linearly in the 1080i29.97 Apple Pro-res.
The main issue is, when my editors drag these files into FCP, there are massive sync issues.
My question is this: is there something in the chain I’m doing wrong, or is this problem unavoidable based on the way I’m operating? Admittedly, I have very little experience with upconversions, especially when it comes to using hardware and even moreso when I don’t have the source material, just files.
If anyone has any suggestions at all, I’d greatly appreciate it. I realize this question might be hard to answer because you can’t see my actual set-up.

that should all be possible and if you have a Teranex
you have the best equipment available for the task.Sound like you need to consult a local video engineer
or whomever is on your staff that can ensure the Teranex
or whatever is causing the problem can be fixed. -
well, unfortunately, I’m the closest thing at this company resembling an engineer.
Could this be a delay issue with the Kona card? (The kona grabs control of virtual vtr in this situation)

do you have 2 final cut systems and kona cards?
I would play out from one to the teranex then capture
on the other (thats what I do)maybe virtual vtr is causing it?

Yeah, both machines have FCP and Kona 3 cards. I’ll give that a shot

oh you have kona 3?
if the teranex is causing the delay and your on a tight
schedule to just get it done, upconvert from one of the kona 3’s.quality may be a bit less, but should have no delay issues.

stop using the Teranex, stop using Virtual VTR.
Open up FCP. Open up an AJA Kona 1080i project (prores422Hq).
Open a new sequence. Import your 525 clip into this sequence.
RENDER ALL (it’s a menu choice). Play out your clip with NO ISSUES, and no external hardware.Next time, please post in the AJA Kona forum.
