P2 conversion with FCP to FCE?
I have a friend who shot HD on a P2 camera. She has the files on a USB drive.
She wants to edit in FCE, but needs to convert the P2 files to HDV res (her words not mine) so FCE will recognize them.
I have FCP. What’s involved? Is there a batch convert for this?

Probably Compressor.
She’ll be adding 25:1 long GOP compression to an already compressed DVCPro HD format. But if that’s what she wants, that’s what she’ll get.

HI Walter,
She asked the shooter for HDV quality originally, but the shooter didn’t do it. She edits on FCE so now she’s sort of jammed up.
I think she should keep the original P2 files incase she upgrades in the future. She says she has about 3 hours of footage. That sound like a lot of rendering time. Any guesstimates on how long that might take on a Pro Mac.
Can compressor render new files right back to her USB drive (providing it has room)?
I’m out of my league here, just trying to help a friend, so I don’t want to mess her up any more than she is.

Batch convert the media to the Apple Intermediate Codec at the appropriate frame size and frame rate.

Taking an I frame format and converting it to a long GOP format is just plain silly…and stupid. Sorry…but it is. Quality will take a SERIOUS hit, it is converted into a very processor heavy format. Sorry…no.
Do what Tom says…convert to Apple Intermediate. THat is an I Frame format that is more compatible with DVCPRO HD. The quality hit will be FAR less..and FCE edits with AIC.
If your friend INSISTS on HDV…they obviously have no clue about the format. IF it wasn’t shot HDV, stay OUT of that format.

The one that matches what was shot. If shot 1080i…use 1080i. 720p…use 720p.
