HELP!! FCP won’t launch
I just “upgraded” from OS 10.4.11 to 10.5.8. Now, FCP won’t launch. When I click on the icon in the dock, it starts to launch, the FCP window opens and it starts running through the “loading…” thing, but then freezes and the application never starts. When I try to force quit, it says FCP is not responding, then about 10 seconds later FCP appears to quit, but it still shows up in the force quit window as not responding.
I’ve tried re-installing all of Final Cut Studio, re-upgrading all of the FCS apps; then, I repaired disk permissions and trashed the FCP preferences. None of it has worked. I have FCS 1, and FCP 5.1.4.
I had the same problem with Skype after the OS upgrade, but I managed to trash it (I don’t use it anymore). All of my other apps (DVD Studio Pro, LiveType, Firefox, Mail, Photoshop, Text Edit, MS Word, Address Book) work fine.
I have a G5 quad processor (4x 2.5 Ghz), 3.5 Gb RAM.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is a MAJOR problem.

You need to reinstall from the ground up any time you change to a new OS or install a new version of Studio. Hitting the “upgrade” button on an OS or Studio install can result in things going south… not always, but more often than not I think.
Backup your hard drive or backup all files you need to preserve. Then perform an erase and install of Leopard, update it all the way, then install Studio 2 and upgrade it all the way.
It will fix you right up.

I have FCS 1, not 2; will that work with such a ground-up reinstall? If I do this, I assume I’ll have to re-install and re-upgrade every application? Since I have an upgrade disk for 10.5, not a full version, will I have to re-install 10.4 first?

I don’t know actually… FCS 1 was written for Panther as I recall. you’re two OS’s beyond, but it should work OK I’d think. That said, it will be best to be running no later than Tiger I’ll wager. This is Pro software and is usually most stable under the OS it was written on in the first place.
Heck for a few bucks more you might find an upgrade for FCS 2 on ebay or whatever… You’d do yourself a favor if you’re not into buying a new machine that will run FCS (2009). Takes an intel machine… FCS 2 on Leopard is rock solid I know.

Thanks for your help. One more question: Is it possible to run both 10.4 and 10.5 on my G5 somehow? I only need 10.5 for one app (Rapidweaver) and would be happy to keep running FCP on 10.4. Thanks again.

Yes indeed. You can either buy another drive to put inside the tower, or you can partition the drive you’re using now. Install the OS’s one on each… then when you startup, holding down the option key will bring up a screen for you to select the OS you want to start up in. I have three on my own machine actually. One running Tiger and FCS 2, One running Leopard and FCS (2009) and one tiptoeing into Snow Leopard running FCS (2009)… I keep a clean setup for any eventuality that way, and can erase one at will to beta test for various folks…
