Help needed: Trimming top/bottom/sides but NOT with compressor!
Hi all, I have a conundrum. I have perfected a way to get perfect video to youtube for one of our recording artists, but it involves going thru Export/Quicktime Compression and NOT Send to Comporessor. (I can’t find the corresponding settings there – they do not exist – long story). BUT, compressor allows for the 3% trimming on the top bottom sides to get rid of the irritating flickering and one pixel lines when played on YouTube. So, what to do?
I was shocked to see I can’t trim in QT pro. But there must be another tool that will not screw with the file other then to trim side and top/bottom edges no?
Another thought I had was to run the file thru compressor if there was a “bypass all compression and just trim mode.” But I can’t find it…

I guarantee you Compressor can do it.
What you are editing in? What’s your delivery goals for Youtube?

If it’s in QT, it’s in Compressor. You may need to create a new preset or you may just need to find the right tab to display the options you’re looking for, but any codec you see in QT can be used by Compressor.
Also, I think that it’s possible to crop on export from QT Pro. I’m not at my Mac right now, so I can’t check.

Absolutely possible — last button tab before the scripts in the inspector (Second from the Right). Can’t think of the exact name of it right now, but it’s there. Use it all the time. You can use the preview window, too — drag red-outline box to desired location on output preview.

Ha! Do you have a money back guarantee with free shipping? Seriously, I can prove without a doubt there are output settings in Export/Quicktime Compression that don’t logically correspond the settngs in a custom Compression setting. As soon as I have time I will post those here. Right now I have this artist breathing down my neck, and if she was not my sister I would just throw her out of the studio. So if I can do this in QT Pro, I will, then call it a day. But thx so much for trying to help here.

Thx Arnie! As mentioned, as soon as I get a breather I will post screen shots of how you can make a Qt Compression setting outta FCP, that isn’t easily replicated in a custom compressor setting, if at all. But perhaps I need to sacrifice a goat and say the right mantra before it will mystically appear in the compressor UI:)
I am putting more thought into the QT Pro UI (looking for crop) then with a doctoral thesis, but still can’t see it (see screen cap somewhere around here). Maybe I BETTER get the goat and incense out…

Forget about cropping, just scale everything up slightly on the timeline, re-render, and export. No one except us will ever know.

Where did you pick that funny size?
Look again the screen shoot that you sent, you will find the reason of the of the “irritating flickering”.803×505 pixels doesn’t fits in any compressed formats.
To compress the picture, codecs (DV, Prores, H264,..) uses blocks of pixel called MACRO-BLOCKS, and you are letting lines out of these macro-blocks.
There are different Macro-blocks structures depending of the codecs, but NO ONE OFF THEM ALLOWS AN ODD NUMBER OF LINES. If you set an odd number, some lines/pixels IIn the borders of course) won’t be properly compressed causing that flickering.

ha! that cracks me up david..you, I, and my sister will know there will be a dozen pixels missing, and she has accounted for every one.
But here is how I understand it: I don’t have perfectly clean edges in FCP projects dating back prior to v6. I always thought this was inherent in the design of the tool. Prior to this year, all our work went to tape or dvd – so anything on the outer edges of the safe zone was immaterial. Enter youtube. But let me give the slight scale up a try. What ur saying is that if it’s not there on the canvas, it won’t be there on export right? That really is a simple fix.

Hi raf, while I understand what u are saying, I don’t think that’s the cause of the flickering few pixel lines at the bottom and the 1 pixel white line on the side once it gets to utube. The odd size is what I found to produce the best results with this project on utube, and I am not the only one. Miley Cyrus official videos and others are doing it too. I am also using settings gotten from the uploader of one of those Miley videos. It’s a very strange MPEG-4 setting using Export/Quicktime Conversion with H.264 at the odd size and a 5000 data rate and multipass. I did not make this up, but it works, as far as getting the best youtube quality. I will write this all up on the blog or here to let others examine, AS SOON AS I get my sister cum popstar the heck outta my hair…
