Shooting in video, finish eventually in 35mm
Hi all:
In a few weeks I’ll be editing a short film that is going to be shot in 1080p with the Panasonic HVX-200. The short will be first submitted to festivals in DVD, but there are also plans to transfer it eventually to 35mm film, which causes me to wonder: how should I edit and color-grade it to avoid screwing up the eventual transfer? (I’m in PAL-land, BTW, land of the 25fps. Did I mention that I have no experience with film at all?)
I’ve searched this board, and the most useful thread I found was this one: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1057353. The conclusions I took from it are:
1) Check with your lab (can’t really do it, since the film transfer won’t happen for at least one year).
2) Edit everything in 25fps. When you have to transfer to film, all you’ll have to do is slow down the image and sound to 24fps (in the case of sound, using a pitch shifter).
3) Color-grade using the 709 color space. Don’t worry too much about the whites going over 100, but do worry about not crushing the blacks too much.
4) Safe areas: a bit of the sides can be cropped during projection, so use 5% and 10%.Is the above list correct? Did I miss anything else I might want to take into account?

Do it anyways. They will tell you exactly what you need to do.
doesn’t matter when you do it really. You might be surprised to find
you may not need to do anything special at all. most labs have
the equipment to make your footage look great when printed to film. -

I started the tread few weeks ago and and yesterday the short was sent to print.
There is also some interesting info in a thread in the Color Forum.
In Color Broadcast safe I’ve set IRE Ceiling at 109 and the rest as it is.
A Chris points the people in the transfer house they have already long experience in printing video material.

I just wrapped out a tape to film project that is headed to the Berlin Film Festival. The footage was shot with a Panavision/Sony F900 rig at 24.0 fps. The transfer to film will be 1:1 by doing this. No need to slow down 25 fps footage. Does the HVX shoot 24.0 fps?

I work with film to video transfers all the time. It’s my day job, actually.
If you’re shooting 25fps PAL, you leave it that way. That gets shot out to film frame for frame. Whoever makes the optical sountrack negative will adjust the speed of his camera & pitch shift it to compensate.
Color grading video for film can be iffy if you have no experience. We regularly see material that has had all of the detail crushed out of the whites and blacks. Once it’s gone, it’s gone, so it’s best to try to preserve it. Proper monitoring and scopes will help with this.
Again, you should talk to the lab.
