1200A distorted audio
Posted by Donato M. rondinelli on November 30, 2009 at 10:49 pmI was given 2 tapes that were shot on a Varicam. When I play the tapes on a borrowed AJ-HD1200A, the meters are in the red. Audio sounds nasty. Does this deck have output control like a PVW2800? The pots look like they’re just for input. Could this be fixed on a deck with output volume levels or is the audio ruined?
Thanks!

November 30, 2009 at 10:51 pmThat deck does not have output controls. It plays back the audio exactly it was recorded in the field.

November 30, 2009 at 11:05 pmIf the clipped audio is mission critical have a look at this:
https://www.izotope.com/products/audio/rx/I’ve seen it bring awful clipped recordings back to life.

December 1, 2009 at 8:51 pmThanks Colin. Great plugin but it doesn’t remove everything. Maybe it’s too far gone? It brings it back to life but not all the way.

December 2, 2009 at 5:42 amSorry to hear that! Guess if the audio is too far gone, it’s gone…
Out of curiosity what happened to the audio? Line feed into a mic level input, or just recorded too hot?

December 2, 2009 at 12:53 pmNo idea. The producer left for India & customs wouldn’t let the camera guy go. So she had to find a crew there. She questioned the DP multiple times about the audio, but he repeatedly said it was OK. At first, they didn’t have headphones, just the camera speaker. She’ll probably have to hire someone over there to re-shoot and she’s already over budget because they overcharged her for the shoot. They seen her coming a mile away!

I’m pretty certain that camera speaker sounds distorted at all times so they would have no way to knowing if the audio was distorted.
We have had instances of people submitting stories for a news series we edit here where we can literally see the audio person with headphones on, but the audio is completely overdriven and distorted. there’s definitely some issues out there with folks having no clue what they are doing with a/v equipment.

You’ve got that right! I also work as a camera op and have caught quite a few “sound guys” only monitoring from their mixer and not the camera output…

Sorry to hear that. Too bad the plugin wouldn’t save the sound for you.
Hopefully it all comes together for you!Colin McQuillan
