  Significant color shift between FCP and COLOR?

  Hi there,

  I get a significant color shift when sending footage – either adjusted or unadjusted/unmodified – from FCP to COLOR.

  Before anyone asks, the color shift is visible both internally or on an external broadcast preview monitor.

  From within COLOR, I ‘send’ back to FCP this sequence – which is still without any form of adjustment – apart from being sent to COLOR, the apparent color shift is now visible/added to the imported sequence (from Color).

  I’ve tried this on three separate Macs:
  1. The Mac above,FCP 6.0.6. (Leopard)
  2. A Mac with the same version of FCP as above. (Snow Leopard)
  3. A Mac with an earlier version of FCP. (Leopard)

  Does everyone have the same problem?

  If not, does anyone have a solution?

  What format are you editing in FCP? Color will render out as ProRes, and that might change something. But no, I never have had that issue and I go back and forth between the two multiple times a week. HDV captured as ProRes, then rendered out as ProRes. Everything looks right on the external monitor.

  What monitor are you using? Capture card?

  As Shane points, an external monitor is the only way for don’t getting messed with gamma.

  No I have not seen this behaviour. What codec are you sending and what codec is returning?

  Thanks for your quick responses.

  As a result of your questions I’ve tried various import/export options within FCP and COLOR.

  In FCP:
  – under Preferences/Editing/Import Still/RGB Video Gamma > I set this to > Source (I suspect this option may have been set to something other than “Source”)
  – under Preferences/Render Control/Codec > I set this to > Apple ProRes 422… (This was previously set to “Same as sequence Codec”).

  In COLOR:
  – under Project Settings/QuickTime Export Codecs > I set this to > Apple ProRes 422 (I believe this was previously set to “Uncompressed 10-bit 422).

  With much relief this returned consistent coloring across the imports and exports between FCP and COLOR. So far I’ve only tried this on one of the three Macs. Later this week I’ll try the same on the other two Macs, and I’ll pay particular notice to the initial settings mentioned above. I’ll get back with the result from the other machines.
