  • Auto Trash Preferences?

Posted by Zach Lynn on November 20, 2009 at 5:48 pm

I work in a university video editing lab with 15 Final Cut Pro suites.

Is there any way to have FCP automatically trash preferences each time a person closes (or opens) the program? This would stop annoying user-based errors such as forgetting to reset the scratch disks or cluttering the preferences with window arrangements and other favorites.

    Thanks!

You can use any of several products and freebies that will trash your prefs on request but I think your expectations are incorrect. Trashing the prefs will cause more problems than solve. The important thing is to learn how the application is supposed to work and conform to those methods. if the prefs are trashed each time, all of the options must be reset each time.

There are third party programs like Digital Rebellion’s pref manager that allow you to store a preference set and trash/ restore that saved setting. I have no skill with scripts but if you can have that execute on program close or open that may be possible.

However, it would be very annoying to the editor to have to reset all their settings manually just because they needed to reboot during an editor or the computer is shut down overnight. I would assume it would be better to do this at the start of a new job not every time the program is closed or opened.

What? Universities these days are teaching kids in FCP? I thought they all still force fed Avid…15 iMac (or are they Mac mini’s) editing suites in a “lab?” Get outta here! Do you go to the University of Dubai?
You know, you could buy a new MacPro for $2700, save the other $20,000 per year in tuition, stay home, and learn things that the school doesn’t want you to know…Or, you could graduate from the University, get promoted to intern or hopefully freelancer and live on bread and water for 10 years…
