I guess this a two part question:

Im using my express port on my 17in macbook pro to recieve HD-SDI footage.

    1) I need to capture it to a HardDrive. What is the best Firewire 800 drive that’s Fast and Affordable.

I’d like to record 10bit 4:2:2 uncompressed, but that’s probably not going to happen. (purchased a Drobo pro and am gonna TRY iSCSI (using the Ethernet), but doubt that will work)

    2) What is the best codec for me to encode in, if I cant record uncompressed 10bit since the drive isn’t fast enough and still keep the footage 4:2:2. I do alot of chroma keying.

Drobos are built for data redundancy not for speed.

    Capture Pro Res.

They are all extremely similar so its not going to make a huge difference on choosing one over another. However that said I would make sure it is at least a 2 drive raid. I myself have been looked at the CalDigit VR mini for a nice portable drive.

I purchased it for storage, but figured I would try it out. Not expecting it to work, but might as well try.

Apple Prores 4:2:2 HQ, LT, or just 4:2:2? These should keep the colorspace?

Thanks again..my new toys are keeping me up 🙂

I highly recommend CalDigit VR. eSATA and FW800 so you can use it either way…say when you have your capture device disconnected. Also recommend the MaxxDigital Edit Vault…I like that and the little carrying case. NO POWER BRICK on that one…which is why I really like it.

    ProRes 422…Very good quality.
