How to maintain the most quality when editing VOBs
What is the best approach/tool/settings combination when editing VOB files from DVDs in order to maintain as much quality as possible from the the original DVD? I have 8 DVDs of football footage and need to produce about a 20 minute compilation. I used mpeg streamclip (using a couple of different settings including 8 bit uncompressed) to convert the VOB files to MOV files for use in FC. I edited the footage, sent to Compressor (using 2 pass), and burned the disc. The result is a jittery look with artifacts around the football players. I also tested similar approaches using Adobe Premier Pro and its media encoder…I got a little bit better results but not much….

In continuation of your post below, ProRes or Uncompressed 8 bit is as good as you are going to get.
You will never get better quality than your original source.
You might want to try one pass CBR of 6.5 or 7.0 in Compressor.
As I said earlier, do not expect great results.

Right. 8b Uncompress would be the codec that would hold the whole information of your picture without further compression.
Prores would, unnecessarily, record in 10b and would add some compression, but probably is the best solution due to the big file size of 8b Unc.Have alook to the Stream Info in MPGStreamclip and transcode keeping all the original setting:
Field order
Size
Time-base.
Let MPGStreamclip just transcode.

Did you know that Premiere Pro can edit a .vob directly off of the DVD with Premiere Pro CS4.1? No conversion would be the best approach in this case.

Nothing wrong Dennis. You say the first solution that came to your mind.
What it really disappoints me is when somebody ask for the setting to upsize a picture in Compressor, and get the recommendation of hiring a Teranex 🙂
