  Nearly Finished but need help with render settings

  System Settings
  Final Cut Pro 7
  2.66 Quad Core Mac Pro with 6g of Memory
  GeForce GT 120 512MB card
  Black Magic HD Extreme

  Sequence Settings
  1920×1080 interlaced HDTV 16:9
  Field dominance – upper (odd)
  Pixel – square

  Footage is a mixture of XDCAM EX 1080i, 720p, and some PAL SD DV tapes.

  The film is 26 mins long.

  Hi everybody.

  First off all can I say a big thankyou for helping me with this first FCP project, these forums have been an invaluable source of information.

  It’s been a steep learning curve but we are nearly at the finishing post.

  I just have some last questions regarding the best way to finish.

  The film is now picture locked and mixed, we need to deliver 2 versions on two PAL DVDs which the client will then copy for distribution, one english and one with dutch subtitles. But we want to keep a HD version of both for our own archive.

  The producer has created a simple menu in iDVD which we will use to produce the DVD

  I have put the subtitles on the very top layer and intend to duplicate the sequence then delete the top layer for the english version.

  I have put a Nattress de-interlacing filter on the interlaced footage to disguise the mix of standards (and also because we like the filmic look)

  I have set Render in High Precision YUV” and “Render Motion Effects: BEST

  BUT

  When I go ‘render all’ it stops after 15 mins or so and comes up with ‘error – out of memory’. It does the same thing when I reduce render quality settings.

  Why is it doing this? 6g should be enough shouldn’t it?

  Also, which codec should I use to export the quicktimes for the SD PAL DVD?

  And, I have noticed that when I disable the top layer of video then enable it again, any rendering is lost. Is this normal? Its very annoying.

  Finally, we are unsure what the best way to make an HD archive is.

  Originally we were going to hire an HDCAM SR deck and lay off a couple of tapes, but then we thought maybe we should just export an HD Quicktime. I feel like it would be best to have the tape but the producer doesn’t want to shell out for the deck.

  His view will probably win the day seeing as he holds the purse strings so which export settings should I use? The kit is not being used for anything else so we can leave it exporting for as long as we need.

  I assume you are 1080 50i. If so then the final quicktime should be ProRes 422.

  If you turn off a layer then don’t turn it back on but hit undo instead. This will preserve the renders. This is if you simply wish to toggle.

  The out of memory may be a still that is too big. Try rendering in small sections or look to see if there is a graphic with big pixel dimensions. It may also be a corrupted file.

  My advice for SD is to do the down conversion with hardware. I don’t know if the Decklink Extreme down converts look any good now. I used to have a Decklink HD Pro and the down convert was ordinary. I now have a Kona 3 which does great down converts. There have been many posts about geting a decend down convert in Compressor. A search of this forum should reveal a wealth of advice on that.

  iDVD makes ordinary DVDs. I would recommend learning DVD Studio Pro and have Compressor do the mpeg conversion.
