  FCP Advice for 90min HDV project, bear with me…

  After years of PC troubles I’ve decided to dump it for a mac. I will be using FCP on an Xeon 8core mac pro with 12 gigs of ram with 2 or 3 TBs of storage.

  The upcoming project will be 90-100mins and will be edited and graded in PCP studio. I will no doubt capture 25-50 odd hours of footage… Mostly HDV with some DV as well.

  My main concern is whether I should capture material as HDV or convert to ProRes as I capture, and if so which pro-res? My main concern is that I don’t want to get 2/3 into it and start having playback or codec mutation issues etc… (past experiences)

  I know alot of this is covered else where, but in my experience once a project gets over an hour things are often different.

  Any advice on how to go about this would be really appreciated.
  And please remember, I am pretty new to Mac and FCP.

  This topic has been covered many times here at the COW. Start by doing a search for HDV workflow. If you then have some specific queries then feel free.

  Go with Pro Res, editing HDV codec is no fun at all. Regular Pro Res 422 will work perfectly.

  There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
  Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!
