XL2 importing footage
Posted by Greg Burke on October 26, 2009 at 10:42 pmHello all. I am shooting with a XL2 16:9 on MiniDV and the problem im having is when i digi in the footage via firewire cable though the XL2 the footage looks awful. I mean I know that its not HD but it really does look cheap and bad. I can fix the problem by uprezzing all the footage to Apple ProRes but is this the correct way to do so? Im running FCP 6.0.6 on a MacBook Pro 15″ on OS X snow. Hit me back with an answer.

Explain “looks bad” does it look as good as it does when you play it out from the camera to your video monitor? It should look the same as that…
If you want HD, You have to shoot it I’m afraid…

October 26, 2009 at 11:00 pmvery pixelated…lots of lines just low quality all around the thing that bugs me is the XL2 is a 2200$ camera and a 200$ minidv camera gives us the same quality of footage. I just can’t put my figure on it when I upres to Apple Proress everything look great to the quality that Im happy with. Am i importing the footage incorrectly?

October 26, 2009 at 11:45 pmAre you watching this on a monitor or through QT? If QT, you need to install v7 for Snow and turn on the high quality option in the preferences.

The XL-2 does not hold up very well to today’s HD Prosumer cameras. I would agree with you that your $200 DV camera can look as good, but I would argue that in terms of stability, lens quality, and features the $200 pea shooter pales in comparison.
If your shooting your xl-2 in 24p make sure to use the de-interlace filter in FCP, it will clean it up a bit.
In conclusion, start shopping for a new camera when funds become available. The HVX’s DVCPROHD format I think is cleaner looking than any HDV camera, but even HDV will show vast improvement over an XL-2.

I’ve been editing HD for a long time now, and got an SD shot thing just this week to edit. It looks like ca-ca… But it’s shot OK, and there’s nothing really wrong with it, just compared to HD it doesn’t hold a candle.
HD sure knocks the socks off SD!
