  • Talking about mov file sizes, is there a limit?

I’ve been using XDcam HD and EX in a production environment for a while now for medical use.

We’re now considering using the format for long-form recording in surgery. So my typical 5-10min clips (currently I try to ensure that any one clip is less than 4GB and so fits on FAT32 drives) will be exceeded. This I do so that I can edit PC or Mac off the same drive.

If we put XDcamXE recorders in our operating theares and users just leave the things recording we’ll end up with individual mov files up to 32GB. Are movs this size viable? The largest individual media file I’ve ever used was 12GB. That was on a PC formatted NTFS and worked perfectly – but worried me a bit!

What is the largest media file that you’ve successfully handled in your projects and is there a theoretical limit?

    Thanks

    Alan

    Hi Alan,
Now working in HD I use a lot Prores, so the files I export are no so big.
When working in SD I’ve been often mastering in 10b Unc.
45/50 minutes movies took some 70 GBs.
My old G5 could manage that without problem.
I know that people manage files with few hundred of GBs without any issue.
I haven’t heard never of any file size limit.

    Very interesting. Thanks Rafa.

Let’s see if your 70GB can be beaten!
