  • Creating a cracked glass effect

Posted by Zoe Beth on July 24, 2007 at 4:05 pm

    Hello there,

I need to create an effect to make it look like a truck in some footage that is driving towards the camera actually proceeds to drive into the camera and crack the camera lense/the viewer’s screen.

So far I have created a vector shape in Illustrator to suggest the crack in the glass. I have then duplicated the truck footage several times and masked of areas using the vector shape as a guide. i have then put a magnify effect on some of the truck layers to try and excentuate the “cracked camera lense”. Also some blur.

It doesn’t look too bad, not entirely authentic but the idea comes across.

Was interested to find out other approaches though to improve the look of it if anyone has some suggestions?

    thank you in advance

    Zo

Make a grayscale image of cracked glass where the (large) different pieces have a different gray value, then use this image as a displacement map for the displacement map effect, which would be applied to the footage? This would shift the image slightly for each piece of glass.

Maybe also add some semi-transparent images (also displaced) over the footage to suggest reflections in the glass?

A little camera shake on impact? (check the sticky post at the top of the AE COW)

Not sure how much this helps but I made this a little bit ago doesn’t look very realistic but depends what your going for. All I did for the glass crack effect was Lighting still frames then composisited them back in ae and used linear wipe to make them grow.
