I am working on this historical film that was shot EX 1080 25p
I have a huge amount of historical still photos
and the media was shot fairly wide as a directors call to “re frame in post production”, meaning since we are working EX 1080 in a DV PAL sequence we would be able to blow up the video without loosing quality

my sequence is 1080, as the directors was talking about a HD as a deliver format.
he changed his mind and now we are talking about SD
so I realized that in order to create an SD DV PAL sequence of the film I will have to re pan and scan every single photo that I have in the sequence
I also noticed that 1080 doesn’t look good at ll in DV PAL sequence and I have to render everything

I was advices to convert all media into SD. but then I will lose the option of editing 1080 picture in a 720 which gives me the privilege to zoom into the video

what do you advice me to do?

I hope was able to describe the situation clear enough

many thanks in advance for your help

    Hi Tel,
the first thing is to change your sequence codec to Proress.
Nothing will look OK in a DV sequence.
I wouldn’t recommend you to upscale nothing in FC, but for downscaling FC makes a decent job.
Before rendering your SD sequence, set “Render all YUV in High Precision” and “Motion Effects Renderring: BEST”. This should help with the dowsizing.
    Best,

Hi Rafael, thanks for your reply
ProRes is still 1080, and my problem is that the media was shot in mainly LS (especially interviews) so that we could change the frame size in post production when working with a 1080 in a 720 frame size
if I down convert I will lose the whole concept of the quality when resizing the frame, and if I don’t down convert and work in 720 i will look bad quality. and there is no point in working 1080 since we are exporting SD
    any idea what to do?

DV PAL is lower field first. All HD is upper field first. Sounds to me like your fields are becoming reversed.

You’ll want to check your duplicate thread over on Ken Stone …

If you want to edit in SD then one option is to cut in an Apple ProRes 422 PAL 48 kHz sequence … edit your clips in as normal (they will be scaled down to fit within the frame; when you’re happy with the basic sequence then select all and press Cmd-Opt-V (to Remove Attributes), tick the Basic Motion checkbox and press OK … now you can reframe as needed with full SD resolution.

An alternative is to cut the edit in HD as the master and then create an SD copy in which you replace only those shots that need reframing as above

    Best
