Capturing 10bitUncompressed SD Raid option
Hi Cowmeisters Hope all well
silly question about requirements for capturing 10bit uncompressed.
I got this online job for a broke filmmaker, I got the telecinied 16mm footage on DBCT.
now I am the colorist in this gig and the post financial advisor.I donate my equipment and skills for these projects, I want to see their film done too, out and move on to other conquests.
My question:
I got Mac Pro 2.66 dual core, 6gb ram, AJA Kona 3 card running leopard and FCS2. ok
I am going to rent a J-30 sony deck to capture using SDI for my online.I was thinking poorman’s process and Raid some 7200RPM internal sata’s (3 of them) to capture the online project. since its 75mins long It’s not really going to take up that much space anyways. even in the 10 bit world(with today’s price perGB)
Do you think I should do poor man’s process and just capture to my internal Raid 0 or :
a. Buy Esata card, use Esata Graid ES pro
b. Buy Caldigit Element Raid
c. vist Fry’s buy 3 500GB 7200rpm drives and feel lucky regarding possible dropped frames.
d. drop uncompressed 10 bit and use Pro Res instead. (color information loss?) 28mb/s vs 8mb/s right? -

Internal SATA drives, non-striped, will work with UC 10-bit SD just fine.

and in my quest for answers I found this helpful comparison test, it’s a bit dated (2 years ago) but I found the pro res comparison interesting.
