audio hardware setup
Hey Guys,
Trying to figure out what to do with my audio setup here.
I’m in a *cubicle* type office space, so headphones is my primary listening situation about 80/20% headphone/speakers.
I’m monitoring right now directly from my mac pro, but video monitor is HD-SDI from a Matrox MXO2. This creates a slight sync issue.
I can directly monitor the maxtrox box, but then I have no access to my mac pro audio output…listening to music, checing VM via email…etc.
I need a setup (mixer?) that can blend my MXO2 output and my mac pro … both have digital outs – one is BNC – AES/EBU and other is toslink digital.
Any ideas?

That’s what Playback Offset is for.
System Settings > Playback Offset. Adjust as necessary to make your external monitor and your audio play in sync.

Get yourself a good pair of studio monitor speakers. Genlec on the high end to Edirol on the low end.

I was looking @ some JBL digital input speakers…they allow for expanded setup, at the point when we may start doing surround, etc.
But right now…I’ll be monitoring via headphones.
Question is, best way to mix digital out from Mac Pro & digital out via MXO2.
Is there a mixer than can input -> toslink (optical) and AES/EBU (coaxial)?

Forget the digital outputs, use good old analog for monitoring, you will not gain anything with digital routing on this. Both your Mac and MXO2 have exelent analog outputs. Go and buy something like:

It cost´s like 65$ and that will do EXACTLY what you need!
Connect your Mac, MXO, headphones and speakers to it and start working. -

So – Mac Pro hook up Mini -> RCA stereo?
Matrox – XLR -> 1/4 jack?
Is that how you’d set this up?
If I only hook up one XLR to 1/4″ from my MXO2, does that push all channels mixed?

-Right, or you can as well use MXO rca connectors to go to 1/4 jack, whitch ever cable you happen to own or find.“If I only hook up one XLR to 1/4″ from my MXO2, does that push all channels mixed?”
-I don´t know, i don´t have Matrox MXO, but from my experience if it says something like “left/mono” or “right/mono” beside the connectors that will work or if you can conficure mono-out from MXO menus, it will work but in all other cases it won´t do the trick for you. I highly recommend to use two cables!
