  • XML/SMI Import into FCP 6 help please! :)

I have some footage that was shot on XDCAM and given to me. I didn’t capture/transfer it and I don’t have any copies of the raw P2 cards. One of the takes that was shot was split across two cards but they were transferred one at a time so the split scene didn’t transfer over. It got split into two .xml and .msi files, one for each P2 card.

I tried importing them into FCP6. It takes the xml, then asks for the msi, when I select it it tells me there is some template that doesn’t exist error and it wont’t take the file. Also all 4 files are only 4kb each, which seems too small. I’m not sure if the actual footage is still there, and how to import it if it is…. I’ve googled it and can’t really find much info, so I’m turning to all you awesome smart creative cow people. Please help? 🙂

XDCAM isn’t P2. It is SxS…it is XDCAM. P2 is Panasonic…DVCPRO HD and AVCI. You need to either use the XDCAM transfer software, or install the XDCAM plugin that allows you to use Log and Transfer.

And that is where my XDCAM knowledge ends.

Oh you’re right! I remember now, XDCAM has software. Ok I downloaded it, but it won’t take in the xml/smi files. I think they have already been transferred and the xml/smi files were created during the transfer because the file was split up.

While importing them through the xml import, I get this error:

ERROR: No translation templates matching the selected XML file were found. Unable to import this file.

I have no idea what this means… does anyone know?

Import through XDCAM XFER not xml import
If the files you are trying to import are only 4K there is no media present. The XDCam file structure needs to be intact the same as if you were importing P2 the file structure needs to be intact.
There should be a bunch of folders/files inside a folder, and you can preview the footage inside the XDCAM Xfer app. If that is not happening you’ll need to get hold of the person doing the Xfer and ask for a copy of the disk on a hard drive if it was a real XDCam (shoots on industrial Blu ray and needs a specific drive to be able to read the original files) or the SCHD cards if it was shot on the prosumer series EX etc
