Hello to all out there. I want to know how to make that effect of creatures moving at a differant rate than normal. As in the Grudge. The children move jaggedly and unatural. Anyone have any links are suggestions?

If you figure this out, please let us know.

Independent research over beer suggests the actors are shot at normal speed while moving v-e-r-y slowly. The clips are then sped up with conventional speed altering techniques.

Our brief experiments with a DV camera were inconclusive but they still suggested we were on the right track.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

You can do this easily enough in your editor, rather than after effects. Experiment with cutting frames out at random intervals. I don’t think that there is one “correct” way to do it, so you’ll have to experiment a bit. I’ve had success with chopping out between three and five frames at a time, at random intervals. Anything less than three frames, and nobody will catch it.

    Hope this helps.

Provided you film well (and that may mean slow actions to speed up later, as has been mentioned), You can probably do this with Time remapping in AE. You don’t want to ever move below your original frame rate, so never let the speed go below 100% – otherwise you will get choppy motion.

When your done, precomp everything and then add the CC Motion Blur effect – which wilol create motion blur for the frames that have been sped up, making it look more natural (in an unatural sort of way…).
