  Removing a marking from a shot

  We have a shot that requires the removal of a pencil line from a piece of fabric (to view a still – http://www.warpednoise.co.uk/jibstills/Shot13Take7_00450.psd)

  There is camera movement in the shot and the flag is also moving slightly.

  Any suggestions of a technique that may be suitable to completely remove all trace of the pencil line would be greatly appreciated.

  I’d draw an open mask (a slightly curved line) on a solid to match the pencil line in the first frame, and apply the stroke effect to it using the canvas colour of the flag. Then I’d animate the mask’s shape using keyframes, making keyframes only where the line’s motion changes direction — there’s no need to draw keys on every frame. Use the natural interpolation of the mask shape keyframes where you can.

  If that doesn’t look quite right colour-wise, I’d use that layer as a track matte for a copy of the footage, then slide that footage one or two frames forward or back in time, so the stroke reveals the footage where the pencil line hasn’t appeared yet, or has already passed by.
