3rd party Roto plugin for After Effects? I have 20 seconds to roto, ouch!
Posted by Clint Nitkiewicz hernandez on July 17, 2007 at 1:38 amWell before I begin my journey of the 20 seconds to roto, Im trying to research if any third party plugins to help with this would be of any help.
Possibly something to analize the moving footage and create a tight mask around it, basically to do the tedious work for me, not that Im lazy its just that Im a busy guy, and 20 secons is a lot to roto at 29.97 for one shot, unfortunatley im not charging per frame on this gig so whatever gets the job done fastest would be great by me.
Heres what I did in after effects, this is only 5 seconds, and the mask is not even that tight.

Doesnt Furnace have something for shake? I really would like to stay inside after effects but if I have to switch to another interface I would not mind.
Thanks.

July 17, 2007 at 6:20 amFirst off, your movie is ridiculously huge. You would be doing yourself a favour if you compressed it more for Web delivery. Put a couple of stills at high rez and a compressed movie.
The effect you’re doing looks like it’s achievable with Echo, and you may not require to rotoscope. The end-result won’t be identical but it’s close enough plus it gives an interesting aura which may actually be better for this video of yours; taking its content into consideration.
You may want to look at SilhoutteRoto for an AE plugin. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s a plugin or a standalone application or both. Do a Google.
BTW, how lon did it take you get this far and have you broken up the subject into parts for the roto work. It doesn’t look that difficult but it is tedious and mechanical work. Can get pretty boring and hit the wrong nerves at times.
Good Luck

July 17, 2007 at 12:45 pmMOTOR by Imagineer is pretty good but a little pricey. MOKEY would do this shot in a snap but is even more pricey.

July 18, 2007 at 3:53 amImagineer Systems is offering a deal on Mocha or Motor as well as Mokey and Monet now. Go to the Shake forum and read about it there.
I bought Motor when Toolfarm had the 50% off sale on Motor and I LOVE IT! I rotoscope a lot and this has been a tremendous timesaver. If you roto frequently then it is a great investment. I think Mocha is being offered for $299.00 right now and it is normally something like $2999.00. HUGE SALE!!!

I just bought Mocha this morning for $199.00 since I had recently purchased Motor. I was browsing the Shake forum and saw a post from Imagineer about their special through the end of July. You can get Mocha for $299.00 if you didn’t buy Motor and Mocha is the (as they describe it) “Big Brother” to Motor. Mocha has the ability to track and rotoscope but it is known for it’s planar tracking capabilities.
I have been wanting to get into Imagineer’s stuff for A LONG TIME now but with a 5 person production house I could never justify the expense. Now I can! They are also selling Monet for $1600.00 with is 90% off the regular price. The post was on the Shake forum along with the coupon codes. I hope that helps.

July 19, 2007 at 10:44 amThis looks like an excellent deal. They’re selling Mokey and Monet with 90% off aswell!!?! That’s $16,000 software for $1,600. Madness. VERY tempted to go the whole hog and ask for Monet.
Has anyone used Motor/Mocha aswell as Sillouette Roto? Does anyone know which is the better roto app? I’m talking about integrating into an AE workflow really. I guess Sillouette doesn’t have the planar tracker, but does it have better roto tools than Mocho/Motor?
Cheers.

July 20, 2007 at 12:00 amJimmy,
I have never used Silhouette before. I did all my roto work in Combustion since it has the B-Splines and is just easier than AE. I can tell you that since buying Motor last month, I have been amazed at how quick, easy and fluid it is. We are getting ready to shoot a music video with a new artist named Jon McLaughlin and I am already started to think of some cool roto work I can do with this tool (like having him walk down the street and constantly change backgrounds – I don’t have access to a large green-screen that day). So, motor is worth the money. They are still selling it at Plug-inz.com for 50% off.
Peace,
