Hi I need to export my movie file from Final cut so it can be read by a PC. Originally the client asked for an .avi but the ones Final Cut exported didn’t come out looking great. I asked them if they could accept an .mov. They replied: “Hey, we currently run on pcs only. and some final cut codecs will not convert to pc. if you can render the mov files with the prores codec it should be fine. same with any extras content. we just had this issue with another film.”

Now I’m just wondering what they mean by “render the mov files with the prores codec”?

When you export your show to Quicktime .mov you’ll see the Pro RES codec among the many choices. Use the ProRES HQ codec that matches the properties of your project and you’ll be fine. Apple has ProRES readers in QT for Windows.

    Lance,

Interesting. Exactly why do you recommend ProRes HQ without any info on Dominic’s current project settings?

I suggest you check out Gary Adcock’s white paper on ProRes in which he suggests that HQ has little to no benefits unless you’re working above 1080, i.e. 2K and above.

Thanks guys. I don’t appear to have that codec or at least I cannot find it. My copy of final cut is a little old. Version 5.0. Could that be why? Is there anyway to get hold of the codec if it is missing?
