HDV to ProRes 422 Capture Issue
Hey all,
A few weeks ago, I posted a message talking about the fact when you do the HDV-ProRes422 capture through firewire, your resolution remains at 1440×1080.
Well, this makes editing easier to work with since your graphics look better and there is no conform BUT you have much longer render times. Rendering clips using standard ProRes (say 30 secs) with filters applied may take around 2 – 3 mintues to render. Using HDV converted clips will take about 30-40 minutes using the same filters.
Ok… Now here’s my findings using FCP7.
Clips are still captured at 1440×1080. Render times are much faster (about 4 – 5 times faster). Graphics render beautifully. BUT, your timeline still have to be 1440×1080. Still not a ProRes standard. You can’t view these timelines thru a Kona3 card using the AJA ProRes422 Easy Setups. You have to set it to something else like DVCProHD which is a non-square pixel format.
Here’s my beef… The reason for working in ProRes422 was to get away from the whole HDV thing. But reality shows this isn’t entirely true. ProRes422 is a full raster square pixel format. Doing the HDV-ProRes conversion still leaves eveything in a non-square format, which, in my mind defeats the whole reason for doing this.
Ok… I’m done ranting now.
