Pro Res 444 advice
I have installed final cut studio 2 and edited a lot of stuff with it.
Recently I’ve transfered some 16mm film straight to hard drive with the pro res 444 codec.It is my understanding that pro res 444 is not a codec installed on final cut studio 2 – only on final cut studio 3.
Right now I see my only option is to upgrade at a cost of 300$ so I can edit with pro res 444 – are there any other options????
Could I compress my pro res 444 video to pro res 422, offline edit, then re-compress to 444 and color correct in color, or even REDcine for example?
Is there a plug in for the pro res codec I desire? -

If you’re not opposed to the YUV->RGB conversion, you could capture with the Animation codec which is RGBA. That has been the standard for working with motion graphics (still is for AE) ((hmm, does anyone know if Shake 4.1.1 can use ProRes 4444?))

why did you get material from the telecine that you cannot use? – yes that is your only option to be able to edit with the footage, oh and it better be a beefy intel desktop and not a laptop if you want to do anything in real time.

“Only with FCS3, the codecs are not available in FCS2.
REDcine only works with REDcode not with Film sources- I do not know where you got that info but it is incorrect.

If you own Studio 2 why did you convert to a codec you can’t use?
Either go back and convert it to ProRes HQ or pay the $299 to get Studio 3.

Animation codec doesn’t edit well in FCP.

Sure. Offline at ProRes 422 or even DVCPROHD or DV all would work. Then just online on FCS3 with the ProRes 444 files. Systems that have the latest QT will be able to read the new versions of ProRes, but while you can import a new ProRes flavor to FCS2, you won’t be able to edit it without rendering.
But for $300, I’d just upgrade.
