Latest MacPros
Posted by Paul Witcher on August 26, 2009 at 5:27 pmI know the advice is always buy the best you can afford, but does anyone have any experience of the difference in speed between the new Quad Core’s 2.26GHz or 2.66GHz? The reason I ask is I’m about to shell out more then £5000 (UK) for a MacPro 12Meg memory etc, snow leopard, FCP 3 and the price difference between the 2.26 and 2.66 here in the UK is over £1000 – the question is, is it worth it?
Thanks for any advice you can give

August 26, 2009 at 5:41 pmHi Paul – no experience with that specific configuration but I’ve always found your money is best put to RAM when the clock speed difference is fractional. Bus speed is also important, as you no doubt know. Are there differences there? Finally – speed is relative. If it’s been awhile since you’ve installed near CPUs – you’ll probably be thrilled with either unit. Save the quid for a good brown pub ale and your favorite mate…. 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 5:45 pmAre you comparing the Quad 2.66 to the eight-core 2.26? Both are good computers, but I would strongly suggest the eight core machine if you’ll be dealing with processor intensive workflows. Compressor will utilize the extra processors and I doubt you’ll regret it.
That is, unless you lose your home because you spent the extra money on a computer.

August 26, 2009 at 5:51 pmAs Russell said, eight cores are a wise investment, but in terms of processor speed, the huge premium charged for the “top of the line” procs is really not a great investment unless you have loads of cash lying around and you need a biger tax write off.

August 26, 2009 at 5:51 pmHi Russell,
They are both the 8 cores – my feeling is to save the dosh and buy more memory??

August 26, 2009 at 5:53 pmI agree with David that processor speed isn’t worth the extra money right now.
I would much rather spend the money on a super nice SSD for a start up disk. I’ve heard really great things from that.

August 26, 2009 at 6:07 pmGuys the 4 cores are really 8 and the 8 cores are really 16 cores due to hyper threading – only on the new macs – compressor sees all of the processors -well cool !!!!
