    I have created an NTSC DV 720 x 480 timeline, which matches most of the footage I will be editing in FCP.
    I have an HD PAL Asset which is 25fps 1024×576.
    I am concerned about my Pixel Aspect Ratio when I convert to NTSC and import into FCP.

    Currently I take my PAL file, conform it to 23.98fps in Cinema Tools, then use Advance Format Conversions in Compressor with the following settings:
    Uncompressed 10bit NTSC video
    Frame Controls: Custom / Resizing Filter: Best / Deinterlace: Better
    Encoder – Video Settings 29.97
    Geometry – PAR: NTSC CCIR 601/DV Anamorphic (16:9) 720 x 405

    this results in a file that is 720 x 405 which hopefully I can letterbox in my timeline.

    Everything seems wonderful EXCEPT when i look at the file info in my browser, it says that I have Square PAR for my converted PAL footage, and Rectangular 601/NTSC PAR for all my other assets. I have read threads that FCP6 and more recent may compensate for this, but I am currently running FCP 5.1.4.

    Will this result in distorted segments of my final sequence when I export to DVDSP. My end product will be DVD and streaming web content.

    1. Do I need to correct this issue?
    2. Using what settings in Compressor or other part of workflow?

    Firstly the PAL footage is not HD. Anamorphic PAL is 720 x 576. The file you are using has been converted from anamorphic to 16:9, hence the 1024 pixel width. If you have converted that back into 720 x 480, then it should be anamorphic again, regardless of what info tells you.

    What does it look like in the NTSC DV timeline? That is what matters. If it looks slightly thin or stretched, then adjust the distort in the motion tab of the shot in the timeline. Once it looks right in the timeline, it will export properly.
