  • Silly question about final frame size

Posted by Michael Nichols on August 21, 2009 at 7:32 pm

I am finishing up my 35mm feature. I worked with DPX scans that were 1868 x 780, as the scans were from 2perf 35mm. Since FCP scaling isn’t great, I was going upscale my reels in shake after my color render. I am finishing to HDCAM-SR 4:4:4. Should I do a 1920×1080 matted frame and play out over dual link, or should I render some other size out of Shake? Like 1920 x 817?

I should mention there are some minor 1080 shots which were captured on a video camera and converted to DPX and cut into the film. I just don’t know if there is a problem with matting a 2.35 AR file into a 1080 frame.

What is the final, final, final end product Michael? That always helps when answering these types of questions.

Well, that’s a bit of a trick question: the FINAL master output is going to be HDCAM-SR, with blu ray and DVD masters being generated. However, there will also live a digital master, which will be archived to LTO pre scale. I am grading then scaling. So I wil archive the graded film at 1868 x780 and then scale that appropriately for the SR finish. If the need for a film out applies, I am going to let the house do the color conversion from my digineg.
