I’m on Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 with HD timelines, trying to get it into letterboxed SD for the server.

Does anyone know how to successfully export or compress the FCP timeline or 16:9 HD QT master into a DV25 QT that is letterboxed, maintaining the aspect ratio of the original video? I’ve tried Compressor, MPEG Streamclip, and exporting QT Movie from Final Cut, and seemingly no combination of settings will get it to do it. The video always ends up being squished into 4:3, never letterboxed. It can’t be that hard, I see HD letterboxed on TV everyday.

Export your HD timeline as a reference QT..or Self contained. Ref is faster and you need to trash it after you do this as it might cause issues when you delete render files or make media changes.

ANYWAY…export a QT movie…reimport it. Drop it into a DV timeline. Render…output again. Just dropping it in the timeline makes it letterboxed, so there you go.
