Best way to create 3d text?
I’m trying to get 3d text that has field of depth 3d movement. Just changing the Y axis on flat text doesn’t do the job. Whats the best way to create true 3d text, so that when I change the Y axis it shows its true 3d depth? Aside from programs like 3dsm. Are there basic 3d text programs or plugins? It will be overlayed on top of video so transparent BG is a must. Or is there a trick to simulating 3d text within AE?

For anyone interested, I found a good cheater way to make 3d text. I just created my text image in photoshop. I used a bold faced font and created a metallic look for it. Or you can download metallic styles from the adobe exchange. Then placed my text in AE, created a 3d animation using the Y axis, so it rotates left to right off in the distance. Then applied a CC spotlight to match the field of depth animation. Adding that spotlight to the metallic text really makes it look 3d. Just applying it to plain text doesn’t get the effect at all. But matching the spotlight to the movement and the shine off the metallic text looks top notch.

Another “quick & dirty” is to duplicate your text 10 to 20 times and offset each layer about 2 pixels on the z-axis. By experimenting with lighting, stroke on the text, and the z-offset you can get okay results.
